From Vision to Legacy: The Journey of J.M. Samwel and J.M. Emanueli
Founder: J.M. Samwel / Samwel John Mushi
Co-Founder: J.M. Emanueli / Emanueli John Mushi
One vision. Two brothers. A new generation of AI-powered eye care.
1. The Beginning of a Vision: J.M. Samwel
Every meaningful innovation begins with an idea, but only a few ideas grow beyond their founders to inspire the next generation.
For J.M. Samwel, the journey of Optsam began in 2017 with a vision to improve access to eye care, promote public awareness, and help communities understand the importance of protecting their sight. What started as an individual professional vision gradually developed into a broader ambition: to explore how technology could help bridge the gap between eye-health professionals and the communities they serve.
Over the years, this vision continued to evolve alongside his professional journey as an optometrist in Tanzania. By 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) had become an important part of his thinking about the future of eye-health education and service delivery.
The question was no longer simply how to provide eye-care services to more people, but also how to make reliable eye-health information easier to understand, more accessible, and available to people regardless of their location.
This marked an important transition in the Optsam journey: from a traditional eye-care initiative towards a technology-driven vision with the potential to serve communities on a wider scale.
2. The Family Conversation That Helped Shape the Future
At the end of 2025, as J.M. Samwel prepared to transition into Tanzania's public health sector, he also found an opportunity to spend more time with his family.
During this period, when disruptions to normal activities meant that family members spent more time together at home, he had an important conversation with his younger brother, Emanueli John Mushi, known professionally as J.M. Emanueli.
Born on 11 October 2008, Emanueli is the fourth child in a family of five children born to Mr. John Mushi, while Samwel is the third.
Their conversation was about more than a professional project. It was an opportunity to share an idea, explain a long-term vision, and introduce a younger family member to a field that had shaped his older brother's professional life.
J.M. Samwel explained his ambition to develop Optsam into an AI-powered platform capable of helping people understand eye diseases, visual problems, and eye-health concerns through simple, accessible communication in either Kiswahili or English.
The goal was to make eye-health education easier to access, particularly for people who might struggle to understand complicated medical terminology or reach specialized eye-care services.
For Emanueli, this conversation opened a new window into the possibilities of combining health sciences, computer science, and artificial intelligence.
It was the beginning of a journey in which an older brother's professional vision would become a source of inspiration for his younger brother's own development.
3. From Inspiration to Learning: J.M. Emanueli's First Steps
As 2026 began and normal activities resumed, Emanueli started exploring artificial intelligence and computer science through online learning.
Having completed his secondary education at Charambe, where he pursued a science combination, he was awaiting the next stage of his academic journey. During this period, he also volunteered as a teacher at Mianzini Primary School, the same school he had attended several years earlier.
While contributing to the education of younger pupils, he continued to develop his understanding of computer science and emerging technologies.
His journey was still at an early stage. He was not entering the technology field as an established software engineer, but as a young learner willing to explore new knowledge and discover how technology could be applied to real-world challenges.
What made this experience particularly meaningful was the connection between his learning and his older brother's profession.
J.M. Samwel had introduced him to the possibilities of AI in eye care, while Emanueli began exploring the technological foundations that could help transform those possibilities into practical applications.
Their relationship gradually developed into something more than a conventional mentorship between siblings. It became an opportunity to bring together professional experience, youthful curiosity, independent learning, and a shared commitment to innovation.
The vision was no longer limited to one person's imagination. It was beginning to take shape as a collaborative project.
4. 22 October 2026: The First Major Milestone — Ask Optsam
On 22 October 2026, that shared vision reached an important milestone with the launch of Ask Optsam, the first AI model under the Optsam AI Models & Apps initiative.
Designed to communicate in simple Kiswahili and English, Ask Optsam was introduced as a public eye-health education platform intended to help people understand eye conditions, visual problems, preventive measures, and the importance of seeking appropriate professional care.
Its central purpose is to make eye-health information easier to access and understand, wherever people may be.
Rather than treating artificial intelligence as technology reserved for specialists or advanced institutions, Ask Optsam explores how AI can become a practical educational resource for ordinary people.
A person with a question about their vision should be able to seek understandable information without first having to navigate complicated medical language.
At the same time, the platform is intended to complement, rather than replace, professional eye examinations, clinical judgment, and appropriate medical referrals.
Ask Optsam therefore represents more than the introduction of a digital product. It marks the first major public expression of the wider Optsam vision: using artificial intelligence to make eye-health education more accessible and to support efforts to prevent avoidable vision loss.
The project is available through its official website:

5. The Evolution of Optsam: From One AI Model to a Family of Applications
The launch of Ask Optsam is the beginning of a broader development journey.
Under the identity Optsam AI Models & Apps, the long-term ambition is to develop a collection of AI models and dedicated applications designed to address different challenges in eye health and, where appropriate, support wider healthcare needs.
The vision extends beyond public education.
Future projects may explore ways to support healthcare professionals, including optometrists, doctors, and nurses, through digital systems that complement existing clinical workflows.
One area of interest is the integration of AI-powered applications with diagnostic instruments and other suitable technologies. Properly developed and clinically validated systems could help healthcare professionals interpret relevant information, recognize potential warning signs, identify patients who may require further assessment, and support timely referral decisions.
Such applications would need appropriate testing, clinical oversight, privacy safeguards, and compliance with relevant medical and regulatory requirements before being used in clinical practice.
Another area of exploration involves assistive technology for people living with blindness or low vision.
The long-term vision includes investigating AI models that could work through compatible electronic devices, including smartphones, smart glasses, and earphones, to help users access information about their surroundings and carry out everyday activities with greater independence.
These are ambitions for future development, not claims that every proposed system is already available.
The underlying principle is that artificial intelligence should not exist merely as a technological achievement. It should be developed with a clear understanding of the people it is intended to help.
Every model should have a purpose, every application should address a meaningful need, and every innovation should be evaluated according to its potential benefit to society.
This is the thinking behind the name Optsam AI Models & Apps: a continuing initiative bringing together AI models and the applications designed to make them useful in everyday life.
Ask Optsam is one project within this broader vision.
Other projects may emerge as the founders continue learning, researching, developing, and identifying opportunities where technology can make a meaningful difference.
Some ideas will be shared when they are sufficiently developed, while others will remain under development until they are ready to be introduced responsibly.
6. From Founder to Co-Founder: The Emergence of J.M. Emanueli
For J.M. Samwel, one of the most rewarding aspects of the Optsam journey is seeing his younger brother become involved in the continuation and development of a vision that began with him.
His transition into public service represents a new chapter in his professional life. It also makes the continued development of Optsam through collaboration particularly meaningful.
The intention is not to abandon the original vision, but to create a foundation upon which new knowledge, new skills, and new generations can build.
J.M. Emanueli's involvement represents this transition.
Inspired by his older brother's professional experience as an optometrist, Emanueli is exploring how technology can complement the field he is now studying.
His journey into optometry connects him to the same broad area of healthcare that shaped Samwel's professional life, while his growing interest in computer science and AI introduces an additional dimension to that shared foundation.
This combination creates an opportunity to approach eye health from two complementary perspectives: understanding the healthcare challenges faced by patients and exploring how technology may help address them.
The significance of Emanueli's role is therefore not simply that he is continuing his brother's work. It is that he has the opportunity to contribute new ideas and develop new approaches of his own.
The transition from J.M. Samwel's original vision to a shared initiative involving J.M. Emanueli represents a shift from an individual project towards a collaborative, intergenerational vision.
J.M. Samwel remains the Founder, while J.M. Emanueli is recognized as Co-Founder of Optsam AI Models & Apps.
Their roles reflect a shared commitment to developing the initiative while continuing to grow professionally and technically.
Emmanuel's involvement also carries an important message for young people: innovation does not always begin with extensive resources, advanced qualifications, or an established technology company. Sometimes it begins with curiosity, access to learning, a meaningful problem, and the willingness to start.
His journey demonstrates the potential of connecting education with real-world challenges and of allowing professional inspiration to become a starting point for independent innovation.
7. A Brother's Pride: Continuing the Vision Beyond Himself
As J.M. Samwel reflects on this journey, his sense of achievement extends beyond the launch of an AI model.
He sees an opportunity for the original Optsam vision to continue developing through someone who understands both its professional origins and its potential future.
For him, his younger brother's involvement is a source of pride because Emanueli is not merely following an established path. He is exploring how to extend that path through a new field of technology.
The ambition is to demonstrate that the knowledge gained through healthcare education and professional experience can be combined with artificial intelligence to develop practical solutions for communities.
It is also a reminder that a professional legacy does not have to end with the person who first imagined it.
A vision can grow when it is shared, questioned, improved, and entrusted to others who are willing to contribute their own ideas.
In this case, an older brother's experience in optometry has helped inspire a younger brother to explore the intersection of eye health, computer science, and AI.
Together, they are working towards a future in which Optsam can become more than the original initiative that inspired its creation.
It can become a platform for continued learning, technological development, public education, and socially beneficial innovation.
8. Looking Ahead: Building Technology Around Human Needs
The future of Optsam AI Models & Apps will depend on continued learning, responsible development, collaboration, and a commitment to addressing genuine healthcare needs.
The founders envision an initiative that can contribute to eye-health education in Tanzania and, over time, reach communities across East Africa and beyond.
Kiswahili and English provide an important starting point for communicating with diverse audiences. Future applications may explore additional ways to improve accessibility for people with different educational backgrounds, communication needs, and levels of access to healthcare.
The wider ambition includes public-facing educational tools, carefully developed clinical-support applications, and assistive technologies that could help people with visual impairments navigate aspects of everyday life.
Realizing these ambitions will require more than enthusiasm for AI. It will require technical expertise, professional collaboration, careful evaluation, and an understanding that healthcare innovation must place safety, accuracy, privacy, and human dignity first.
The founders recognize that meaningful technological progress is a journey rather than a single launch.
Ask Optsam is the first major milestone. The broader initiative is the continuing journey.
9. The Meaning Behind Optsam AI Models & Apps
Optsam began with a professional vision to improve access to eye care and eye-health awareness.
That vision evolved to embrace artificial intelligence.
In 2026, it entered a new chapter through the involvement of J.M. Emmanuel as Co-Founder, bringing a younger generation's learning, curiosity, and technological interests into the initiative.
The story is ultimately about how a personal vision can develop into a shared commitment, how professional experience can inspire new learning, and how family relationships can become a foundation for meaningful collaboration.
It is a story of continuity without standing still: preserving the original purpose while exploring new ways to achieve it.
J.M. Samwel brought the original vision. J.M. Emanueli joined the journey with a new generation of possibilities. Together, they are building towards an Optsam that uses AI models and applications to make eye-health knowledge more accessible and to explore responsible technological solutions to real human challenges.
The journey continues, one model, one application, and one meaningful innovation at a time.
